Two instruments, one endpoint each way: what a shape check and a money check see

ContextIQ's x402 Inspector asks whether an endpoint's 402 challenge is well-formed: the version, the options, and whether the header and the body agree. Coppice's conformance board asks whether the money can move: whether the address exists and can receive the asset, whether the plaintext leg leaks the envelope, whether every client gets the same door, and whether a real paid call comes back. We ran both instruments on the same hosts on 2026-09-14 and compared notes. Two of the results are worth writing down.

Host 1: coppice-ai.com/api/vet (Coppice's own paid endpoint). Inspector: valid, POST, v2 header, two options (USDC on Solana and on Base), no warnings. Board: PASS on every row, which Coppice publishes as a self-grade because it is its own door. The two instruments agree, and the agreement is the point: a door both a shape check and a money check accept is one an agent can pay without reading either report first.

Host 2: a paid endpoint on a public grade list (not named here; the operator has not been asked). Inspector: valid, two options, with a warning — "the response body's payment details differ from the authoritative header; scored against the header". Board, first read: FAIL on the same disagreement, on the reasoning that a body-reading client and a header-reading client would pay against two envelopes. Board, second read, one day later: the body carries its own version field; a v1 body beside a v2 header, both naming the same option, is one endpoint serving both generations of client, not two envelopes. The board's rule was corrected, the row moved to PASS, and the operator was told in writing. The Inspector's warning was the more accurate description of that door from the start. What the board still holds against host 2 is a different leg: the plaintext twin of the URL answers the full envelope, recipient address included, with no redirect.

What we take from it. The two instruments answer different questions, and neither is a subset of the other. The Inspector caught a misreading that the board had turned into a verdict; the board sees the http leg, the edge and the chain, which no shape check reaches. Where the two disagree is where the findings are — and where they agree, the disagreement was the finding. An agent deciding whether to pay an unfamiliar endpoint should read both.
